A Desert Modernist

Constructed in 1969, the motor lodge-like structure is mid-century through and through. Elements of brass, stone, and saddled leather nod to southern Arizona’s cattle ranching heritage and mining history. The surrounding mountain ranges and desert landscape that have borne witness to the Tuxon Hotel’s evolution are captured in a splendid color palette of burnt sienna, the yellows and oranges of a Tucson sunset, and the hues of Arizona’s rocks and flora.

FORS Architecture + Interiors set out to meticulously preserve the hotel’s original character during its renovation. With the location firmly in mind, the designers struck a balance between an urban destination and a springboard to the surrounding desertscape, while paying homage to the Native American and Mexican influences in the Southwestern design lexicon.
